William Henry Davies (3 July [a] – 26 September ) was a Welsh poet and writer, who spent much of his life as a tramp or hobo in the United Kingdom and the United States, yet became one of the most popular poets of his time. His themes included observations on life's hardships, the ways the human condition is reflected in nature, his tramping adventures and the characters he met. His work has been classed as Georgian, though it is not typical of that class of work in theme or style.[2]

Born 3 July at Pillgwenlly, Newport, Monmouth; son of Mary Ann and Francis Boase Davies, iron-moulder. He received an elementary education and, at school, became interested in poetry. On completing his apprenticeship as a carver and gilder, he tramped in U.S.A. and Canada, but lost his foot in a train-jumping accident in March He returned to England, determined to succeed as a poet. After many difficulties and setbacks, he published his first book, The Soul's Destroyer and Other Poems, in March Other books followed and, by , he was an established poet and author, with eight books to his credit, and was the recipient of a Civil List pension. In he married Helen Payne. In , for his services to literature, he was awarded the honorary degree of by the University of Wales.
