In the 2009 general election, Stephanie Miner ran successfully against GOP nominee Steve Kimatian and Conservative Party candidate Otis Jennings for mayor and was elected. On May 4, 2013, incumbent Stephanie Miner won the Syracuse Democratic Committee’s designation for mayor. She won a primary challenge on Sept. 10, 2013 from fellow Democrats Pat Hogan, who had reached his term limits on the Common Council, and Alfonso Davis, who lost to her for the Democratic Party’s designation in a primary in 2009.

John F.X. Mannion dies; insurance exec, political force, ex-mayor’s husband
Syracuse, NY -- John F.X. Mannion, an insurance executive who dived headlong into Central New York politics and philanthropy, later becoming known as former Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner’s husband, has died.

The Bronx native of Irish immigrants cut his teeth in the insurance business early on, going door-to-door before moving into the corporate world. After rising in the ranks of a successful insurance company in New York City, he moved to Syracuse to take over a nearly bankrupt local firm.
Mannion, who friends knew as Jack, resurrected Unity Mutual Life Insurance Company into a major local employer, increasing his power and influence along the way. Mannion soon became a Democratic heavyweight, befriending mayors, governors and senators, including former Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Gov. Mario Cuomo.
One of Mannion’s children from his first marriage, Patrick Mannion, took over after his father’s retirement from Unity Mutual in 1998.
After dating Stephanie Miner for about seven years, the couple wed in a private ceremony in 2006. Miner was elected mayor in 2010 and served two terms.
