NBC News veteran Tom Brokaw denied accusations of sexual misconduct Friday. At the time of the alleged incidents, Brokaw was married to Meredith Lynn Auld.
Auld, an author, was Miss South Dakota 1959. She married Brokaw in August 1962, marking nearly 56 years of marriage, according to Internet Movie Database. The couple has three daughters: Sarah Brokaw, Jennifer Jean Brokaw and Andrea Brooks Brokaw. She founded the defunct Penny Whistle Toys, a company she was the president of for 20 years, Workman Publishing's website read. She additionally authored eight Penny Whistle books.
Brokaw said he grew closer to Auld when battling cancer. "[Meredith and I] have been married a long time,'' Brokaw told Parade magazine in 2015. "This cancer experience has just deepened my awe of her. It's hard for me to say I love her more. This has deepened our relationship. We've always cared about each other a lot, but I so depended on her through this."
Linda Vester, a television news host, is one of Brokaw's two former coworkers who accused him of misconduct. "I felt powerless to say no. He could ruin my career. Tom Brokaw, the former staple of NBC Nightly News, has three very accomplished daughters with his wife of more than five decades, Meredith Auld.
For her part, Auld has an interesting biography of her own: She is a former Miss South Dakota, an author, and a toy store owner. Tom Brokaw and his wife are also grandparents.
Brokaw, 78, was belatedly accused in April 2018 by two women of decades-old sexual harassment, allegations he has vociferously and emotionally denied. Linda Vester, a former war correspondent for NBC, alleged that Brokaw “physically tried to force her to kiss him on two separate occasions, groped her in a NBC conference room and showed up at her hotel room uninvited,” Daily Variety reported.
Brokaw made an emotional statement in an email to co-workers and friends in which he denied making overtures toward Vester and referenced his family. “My family and friends are stunned and supportive,” he wrote in an email to co-workers and friends. “My NBC colleagues are bewildered that Vester, who had limited success at NBC News, a modest career at Fox and a reputation as a colleague who had trouble with the truth was suddenly the keeper of the flame of journalistic integrity.&rdquo
