Delaine le bas biography of christopher
•
Grief for her grandmother is the fire beneath Le Bas’s Turner Prize-nominated installation Incipit Vita Nova. Here Begins The New Life/A New Life Is Beginning (Secession, Vienna, ). The slipperiness between the two translations reflects the double play central to her practice. That nothing is ever just one thing. In this large-scale work, the doubleness is deeply felt. ‘The beautiful thing is, I think the work is a response to that grief, goes to the pain of that, but also I’m trying to celebrate the fact of what she gave to me. That I will be eternally grateful for.’
There was a time, after Damian’s death, when Le Bas thought she might not be able to return to the house. But within a matter of days, she was back. She had to develop a different relationship to it, she says. The house changed, as did she, as did her work. ‘I decided to stay. It’s a place for me to come back to. It has a different energy now, I think.’ She pauses to laugh. The laugh is both overwhelmed and determined. ‘And it’s about to undergo another transformation.’
