Padma Shri Dr Ananda Shankar Jayant has been described as one who "inhabits the worlds of administration, academics, and arts; straddling them with equal ease." A Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancer and guru, she was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honour, for her contributions to the field of dance. She has performed across the world, and Dr Ananda is back in Malaysia for her first performance since the pandemic, sharing the stage with her disciple Neha Sathanapalli in a dance show titled, Thyagaraja Ramayanam. Kalakshetra was founded, in the words of its founder Smt. Rukmini Devi, “with the sole purpose of resuscitating in modern India a recognition of the priceless artistic traditions of our country and of imparting to the young to the true spirit of art devoid of vulgarity and commercialism”.
Kalakshetra was born in January, 1936 when Rukmini Devi established an Academy of Arts, and stared training pupils in Bharata Natya. This 78 year old institution stands as a beacon upholding the greatest traditions of our Bharateeya culture and in pursuance of its ideals of
